The demand for these magnets is surging, with the International Energy Agency forecasting a potential doubling by 2030.

Efficiency in electric vehicle motors can be significantly influenced by the strength of these magnets, with offshore wind turbines incorporating large quantities of them for optimal performance. China currently holds a dominant position in the production of high-performance magnets, controlling a significant percentage of the market, including key heavy rare earth elements critical for preventing overheating.

India, recognizing its reliance on imported magnets, has initiated efforts to bolster its domestic manufacturing capabilities to meet the escalating demand driven by electric vehicle production and wind energy expansion. The country aims to leverage its own rare-earth reserves concentrated along its coastal regions to reduce dependence on foreign sources.

Government initiatives are underway to support local magnet production, with plans to establish a rare earth permanent magnet plant in Visakhapatnam. The National Critical Mineral Mission further seeks to secure raw materials, promote recycling, and diminish reliance on single foreign suppliers. Collaborations with countries like Japan, experienced in mitigating rare-earth supply disruptions, are being explored to strengthen India’s magnet supply chain.

The anticipated benefits of these initiatives include increased resilience in the electric two-wheeler industry, reduced geopolitical risks for wind developers, higher-value job creation in manufacturing clusters, and enhanced self-reliance in defense systems. Additionally, the focus on recycling rare-earth materials aligns with global sustainability goals, fostering a cleaner and more self-sufficient technology ecosystem.

By emphasizing the significance of magnets in industrial progress, India aims to assert its autonomy in the clean energy transition. Recognizing the critical role played by seemingly inconspicuous components like magnets, the country is positioning itself for greater self-sufficiency and resilience in the evolving green energy landscape.
