Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed confidence in Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s potential inclusion in India’s 2027 ODI World Cup squad. This affirmation follows their impressive display in the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25.
Gavaskar, speaking to India Today, highlighted the significance of Sharma and Kohli making themselves available for the ongoing series as a clear indication of their commitment to the ODI team and their aspirations for the World Cup title.
“Their availability for this tour signals their intent for the 2027 World Cup. Regardless of their current performance, their skills and experience make them strong contenders for the squad,” Gavaskar stated.
He underlined that their recent form only solidifies their position as key players for the upcoming marquee event. “With their current form, they are almost certain to feature in the World Cup squad for South Africa 2027,” Gavaskar added.
Despite a slow start in the series, Rohit Sharma found his rhythm with a century in the final ODI, showcasing his class and composure. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli overcame a challenging start to contribute significantly with a crucial fifty in the same match, aiding India in securing victory despite losing the series to Australia.
While India faced disappointment in the series outcome, the standout performances of Sharma and Kohli offer optimism for the future. Their demonstrated skills, fitness, and determination suggest they still have much to contribute at the highest level, potentially playing pivotal roles as India aims to regroup and contend for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, a title narrowly missed in the previous edition.
