“Barcelona Faces Squad Crisis Ahead of Real Madrid Showdown”

Barcelona is gearing up to clash with LaLiga table-toppers Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu this Sunday, facing significant squad challenges as confirmed by assistant coach Marcus Sorg, who highlighted the absence of Brazil forward Raphinha. The Catalan side is contending with a long list of injured players as they approach one of their crucial matches of the season.

Raphinha, aged 28, is currently sidelined with a leg muscle injury, joining a group of sidelined players that includes Dani Olmo, Robert Lewandowski, Gavi, and both goalkeepers Joan Garcia and Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Barcelona has been plagued by injuries since August, with a total of 10 players out of action, severely depleting the squad for this high-stakes showdown.

Despite the challenges, Sorg remains hopeful that key players like Ferran Torres, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen, and Frenkie De Jong could be fit for the match after participating in training sessions. Sorg commented during a press conference, acknowledging the impact of Raphinha’s absence while addressing uncertainties about the starting lineup.

Injury worries extend to Torres, who departed Spain’s camp early due to leg muscle fatigue; De Jong, who missed several training sessions due to illness; and Kounde, who was forced out of the recent Champions League victory over Olympiacos following a leg injury. These ongoing fitness concerns have added to Barcelona’s selection woes as they gear up to take on Real Madrid, who currently lead Barcelona by two points after eight matches.

Complicating matters further for Barcelona, head coach Hansi Flick is serving a suspension after receiving a red card in the LaLiga win against Girona. Sorg will lead the team from the touchline and acknowledged the significance of Flick’s absence, emphasizing his positive influence on the players.

Despite these obstacles, Sorg remains optimistic ahead of the match, citing Barcelona’s recent victories over Real Madrid in various competitions last season. As they prepare to face Real Madrid under new manager Xabi Alonso, Sorg emphasized the team’s readiness and the need to control emotions in what promises to be a challenging encounter at the Bernabeu.
