OpenAI has introduced an enhanced version of its ChatGPT chatbot called GPT-5.1, incorporating a new personality feature. This updated model is designed to be more conversational, adaptable, and engaging in interactions. CEO Sam Altman downplayed the significance of the upgrade, dubbing it a “nice upgrade,” but the improvements beneath the surface are substantial. According to OpenAI, GPT-5.1 not only enhances capabilities but also enhances the bot’s warmth, wit, and human-like conversational style.
The GPT-5.1 release comprises two variants: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking, initially accessible to paid ChatGPT users. The “Instant” model serves as the everyday engine, described by OpenAI as now more intelligent, warmer, and better at understanding user commands. Testers noted a newfound “playfulness” in the chatbot’s responses, aiming to make interactions feel less robotic and more akin to conversing with a helpful and witty colleague.
On the other hand, GPT-5.1 Thinking caters to users seeking answers to complex or abstract questions. This advanced model focuses on providing clearer and faster responses for simpler tasks and more in-depth insights for intricate inquiries. OpenAI highlights the efficiency of the Thinking model, emphasizing its ability to save time and streamline communication by using fewer tokens for basic queries.
In addition to its enhanced functionality, GPT-5.1 introduces new conversation styles, including Professional, Candid, and Quirky, alongside existing options like Default, Friendly, Efficient, Cynical, and Nerdy. Users can personalize the chatbot’s behavior by selecting different styles based on their preferences, allowing for a more tailored conversational experience.
OpenAI hinted at ongoing developments in customizing ChatGPT’s tone and behavior, indicating a future where users can fine-tune personality traits beyond preset modes. The company envisions ChatGPT evolving into a more personalized and adaptive conversational agent, aligning with the trend towards individualized chatbot experiences in the industry.
GPT-5.1 is currently exclusive to paid users for a limited period, with plans to extend availability to all users, including free accounts, after three months. OpenAI assures that existing legacy models will remain accessible, and an update from GPT-5 Pro to GPT-5.1 is in the works. The latest update aims to address previous criticisms of GPT-5 and enhance user experience by infusing the chatbot with a more personable and humorous personality.
