A tense situation unfolded in the Kakopathar area of Assam when unidentified terrorists launched an attack on an Indian Army camp late Friday night. According to defense sources, the militants fired at the Kakopathar Company location from a moving vehicle around 12:30 am. The soldiers on duty swiftly responded, ensuring minimal risk to nearby civilian residences.
The attack involved the use of three Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGLs) followed by nearly thirty minutes of continuous gunfire. Despite the intense assault, only minor injuries were reported, with three Army personnel sustaining minor abrasions.
A defense spokesperson confirmed, “No significant injuries were reported apart from minor abrasions to three personnel. The area has been secured, and coordinated searches with the police are underway.”
Reports suggest that the attackers arrived in a truck from the Doomdooma direction and fled towards Arunachal Pradesh after engaging in speculative firing with automatic weapons. Security forces located the suspected vehicle, with registration AS 25 EC 2359, near Tengapani Ghat close to the Assam-Arunachal border along the Noa Dihing river. The ULFA (Independent) group is suspected to be responsible for the assault.
In response to the incident, joint search operations by the Army and police have been initiated to apprehend the attackers. The situation remains tense in the area, which is situated near the interstate boundary of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Security patrols have been intensified in the border areas as investigations progress.
A local resident recounted the frightening experience, stating, “Gunshots were heard well past midnight. Initially, it sounded like rain, but we soon realized it was gunfire. A group in a truck opened fire at the army camp, prompting a retaliatory response from the army. The attackers eventually fled, and senior police officials arrived at the scene. The community is still shaken by the events.”
