Former Chennai Super Kings player Suresh Raina has shared his thoughts on Chennai’s possible player retentions for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. Raina expressed strong support for key players of the team while suggesting that the management should consider making changes to the squad through the mini-auction. This comes amid reports of a potential significant trade negotiation involving Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson possibly moving to Chennai, with CSK’s fan-favorite Ravindra Jadeja heading in the opposite direction.
When asked about Chennai’s potential retentions for the 2026 season, Raina was clear in his recommendations. He voiced his support for MS Dhoni, expressing confidence that the 44-year-old would continue playing in the IPL next year. Speculation about Dhoni’s future arises before each retention deadline, but CSK’s CEO Kasi Viswanathan has indicated optimism about Dhoni’s participation in the 2026 season.
Raina also endorsed Ruturaj Gaikwad to remain as the captain for CSK in the upcoming IPL season.
“It’s crucial to retain MS Dhoni; he is set to play this year, so he should stay with the team. Ruturaj Gaikwad should continue leading the team,” Raina stated during an interview with JioStar.
“Ravindra Jadeja should definitely be retained. He has been a standout performer for CSK, making significant contributions over the years. Sir Ravindra Jadeja is an integral part of the team.”
All ten IPL teams are expected to announce their lists of retained and released players on the retention deadline of November 15.
THE JADEJA-SAMSON TRADE RUMORS
Raina’s comments carry weight, especially amidst speculations about a possible trade involving Jadeja with Rajasthan Royals. Reports suggest that Chennai is in discussions to bring in Sanju Samson, a move that could provide a long-term wicketkeeping option and strengthen the middle-order for the future.
Samson has been associated with Rajasthan Royals for eleven seasons and has been leading the team since 2021. With CSK looking for a successor to MS Dhoni and a reliable Indian batting core, Samson has emerged as a key target.
A senior CSK official confirmed the team’s interest in Samson, stating that they have formally expressed their desire during the trading window. The official expressed hope that Samson would join CSK, although Rajasthan Royals are yet to confirm the deal as they are reportedly evaluating their options.
If the trade materializes, it could be one of the most significant exchanges in IPL history. For Rajasthan, Jadeja’s return would hold significance as he last played for them in 2009 before becoming a pivotal all-rounder for CSK. Additionally, there are reports of England all-rounder Sam Curran also being part of the potential package, possibly moving to Rajasthan in the exchange.
