The conflict between the Taliban and Pakistan escalated further on Tuesday night as fresh clashes erupted between Pakistani security forces and Taliban fighters along the border in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Subsequently, a video circulated on social media suggesting that Afghan forces had seized a Pakistani military tank after the border altercation.
The viral video, shared on X (formerly Twitter) under the username ‘Afghanistan under Taliban rule,’ depicted a person driving an open-roof jeep in an undisclosed location, likely in Afghanistan.
The footage showed the individual filming Pakistani-flagged tanks passing by, with armed individuals, presumably Taliban fighters, stationed on the tanks holding Taliban flags.
The driver in the video was heard saying in a local dialect, “They return from the war, bringing a Pakistani tank with them, all dusty and tired. God willing, they all return to Kandhar.”
The post accompanying the video stated, “#Afghan forces, after a battle at the border, brought a captured #Pakistani tank to their base.” However, the authenticity of the video could not be verified by India Today.
THE PAKISTAN-TALIBAN CONFLICT
The conflict commenced on October 7 when Pakistan conducted airstrikes deep into Afghan territory, purportedly targeting Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants.
These airstrikes, hitting civilian areas in provinces like Khost and Paktika, elicited a strong response from Afghanistan’s Taliban regime, leading to exchanges of artillery fire, drone strikes, and mutual accusations resulting in significant casualties and heightened militarization along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Following the recent clashes, Pakistan’s state media accused Afghan forces of initiating hostilities without provocation, asserting that Pakistani troops retaliated by damaging Afghan tanks and posts.
Islamabad claimed that Afghan forces had repeatedly targeted Pakistani border posts, while Kabul maintained that it was responding to violations of its airspace and sovereignty.
