“New Directive Simplifies Pension Calculation Rules”

The recent announcement by the central government has brought clarity on the calculation of pensions and family pensions for employees covered under the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2021.

The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW) has issued a new directive specifying the last working day that will be considered for pension computation. This directive aims to eliminate confusion and ensure equitable treatment in the calculation of pension benefits.

According to the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2021, an employee’s pension will be determined based on the regulations in effect on their final day of service, whether it be retirement, resignation, discharge, or demise, whichever occurs first.

This final date serves as the pivotal reference point for determining the pension amount, entitlement to family pension, and associated benefits. The government has emphasized that the rules applicable on that specific day will govern the employee’s pension.

The clarification also addresses scenarios where an employee is not actively working before retirement or death, such as being on authorized leave, absent from duty, or under suspension. In such cases, the period of leave or suspension will be considered as part of their service, ensuring continuity in their service history for pension calculations and avoiding disputes.

A notable change pertains to parents of deceased government employees without a surviving spouse or children, who can now receive an increased family pension for life. Going forward, both parents must annually submit separate life certificates to maintain accurate pension records and prevent discrepancies, especially in the event of one parent’s demise and the need to update pension details.

This development enhances transparency in pension processing, minimizes uncertainties regarding retirement dates, and facilitates the timely disbursement of pension benefits. By streamlining regulations related to family pension, the government aims to establish a more systematic and error-free system, offering significant clarity for employees and their families during the pension claims process.
