OpenAI has recently introduced group chats for ChatGPT, a popular tool for assignments and projects. This new feature allows users to collaborate in a single conversation and interact with the AI collectively. Group chat functionality is open to all platform users, including free subscribers, with only ChatGPT’s responses impacting rate limits. OpenAI mentions that group members have the freedom to engage in the chat extensively.
In ChatGPT group chats, users can convene to brainstorm ideas, plan projects, or simply converse together. The AI, specifically the GPT5.1 Auto model, selects the appropriate response based on the prompts provided by the users. Group chats are distinct from individual conversations with the OpenAI model.
To initiate a group chat on ChatGPT, users can click on the people icon within any chat window and invite up to 20 participants. Once invited, the AI sets up a separate group chat while maintaining the original one uninterrupted. Participants can then collaborate, exchange thoughts, and generate plans with ChatGPT’s assistance.
OpenAI assures that ChatGPT has been trained to exhibit new social behaviors tailored for group chats. The AI monitors the conversation flow and intervenes when necessary, remaining silent otherwise. Users can directly address “ChatGPT” to prompt a response. Additionally, ChatGPT may add a touch of fun by reacting with emojis or customizing images based on users’ profile pictures upon request.
