“Kejriwal Warns BJP: Arrogance Could Lead to Gujarat Election Backlash”

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal has accused the BJP of oppressing farmers in Gujarat, drawing parallels to the decline of the Indian National Congress in the late 1980s. Kejriwal, in a video shared online, referenced historical events stating that in 1985, Congress won 149 out of 182 seats in Gujarat but faced a backlash in 1987 due to their perceived arrogance and suppression of a farmers’ movement. He warned that if the BJP continues its rule with arrogance, the people of Gujarat could uproot them in the upcoming election, similar to what happened to Congress.

Highlighting the political backdrop of the 1980s, the 7th Gujarat Legislative Assembly election in 1985 witnessed Congress securing a significant victory with 149 seats out of 182, which was short-lived due to growing dissatisfaction, particularly among farmers. By the 8th Assembly elections in 1990, Congress’ seat count plummeted to 33, while Janata Dal (JD) and BJP emerged as strong contenders with 70 and 67 seats respectively, eventually forming a coalition government.

Addressing current issues faced by farmers, Kejriwal emphasized the grievances raised by farmers in Botad district’s Hadad village during a mahapanchayat on October 12. The farmers demanded an end to the unfair practice of “karda pratha” where traders undervalue a portion of the crop. They also called for reforms in APMC mandis to enable direct sales to traders at the mandi, reducing transport costs.

Expressing outrage over police actions against farmers, Kejriwal criticized the Gujarat government for allegedly resorting to force, including baton charges and tear gas, and filing FIRs against 85 farmers. Kejriwal warned that the treatment of these farmers could set a precedent for others and stressed the importance of unity among farmers.

In a call for unity and political change, Kejriwal urged the farmers of Gujarat to take collective action against the ruling BJP, citing their three-decade rule and escalating arrogance. He emphasized that arrogance does not lead to success and urged the government to listen to the plight of the farmers to avoid facing consequences in the upcoming election.
