In a sudden change of tone shortly after criticizing the security situation in West Bengal as reminiscent of “Aurangzeb’s rule,” the father of the Durgapur rape survivor has issued a heartfelt plea to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, referring to her as a “motherly figure.” The father of the second-year medical student from Odisha publicly expressed his regret for any prior negative remarks towards the Chief Minister and implored her assistance in ensuring justice for his daughter. Just days earlier, he had condemned the state’s safety standards and expressed his desire to relocate his daughter to Odisha for her safety and well-being.
Following his daughter’s alleged assault, the father had rebuked Mamata Banerjee for her earlier statement about women avoiding nighttime outings, likening the situation in Bengal to the rule of Aurangzeb. He emphasized the priority of his daughter’s safety and indicated a loss of trust in the region, emphasizing his intention to take her back to Odisha. The father reiterated his demand for strict punishment for the perpetrators and expressed openness to a CBI investigation, contingent upon the state administration’s decision.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, under scrutiny for her initial comments, clarified that her remarks had been misrepresented and emphasized the importance of women’s safety, stating that girls should not venture out late at night and must take precautions to protect themselves. She assured that no leniency would be shown towards offenders, affirming a policy of zero tolerance towards such crimes.
Meanwhile, in a significant development, West Bengal Police apprehended the survivor’s classmate, Wasif Ali, who was present with her on the night of the incident, identifying him as the primary suspect. Contrary to initial reports of gang-rape, the police commissioner confirmed that the survivor’s account and evidence indicated that a single individual had committed the assault. The survivor recounted a distressing pursuit by a group of men who eventually assaulted her in a forested area.
With Ali’s arrest, the total number of individuals detained in connection with the case has reached six, including a former college security guard, a hospital employee, a municipal worker, and an unemployed individual. The investigation continues as authorities work to ensure justice for the survivor and hold the perpetrators accountable.
