Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar emphasized India’s potential as a key global player and rapidly growing economy that could significantly contribute to peace in the Middle East and aid in the reconstruction of Gaza. However, Azar stressed that this can only be achieved if Hamas surrenders power. Highlighting the importance of defense cooperation between India and Israel, Azar underlined its vital role in safeguarding both nations against external threats.
Recently, Hamas released 20 Israeli hostages to the Red Cross in line with the Gaza ceasefire agreement between the two parties. Azar, in an exclusive interview with India Today TV, expressed confidence in India’s ability to positively influence the region due to its economic strength and strategic interests in the area.
Azar mentioned the deepening economic ties between Israel and India, including a bilateral investment treaty and infrastructure opportunities worth USD 200 billion for Indian companies over the next decade. He also acknowledged the increasing reliance on skilled Indian workers in Israel, especially in the construction sector.
Emphasizing the growing defense collaboration, Azar highlighted joint efforts in defense manufacturing and technology development, aiming to enhance mutual reliance and innovation in the sector. He extended the partnership beyond defense to areas like agriculture, technology, and innovation, emphasizing the strengthening bond between the two nations each year.
Regarding the ceasefire agreement, Azar pointed out Hamas’s failure to adhere to its commitments, posing a significant challenge to regional stability. He urged for international pressure on Hamas to comply with the peace plan, emphasizing the importance of disarmament and cessation of violence for progress. Azar reiterated that reconstruction in Gaza hinges on Hamas relinquishing power, offering hope and opportunities for both Israelis and Palestinians once implemented.
