“India’s Controversial Sanchar Saathi App Sparks Privacy Debate”

The digital realm in India has been stirred up by two recent government directives within a span of two days. Initially, an order was issued concerning SIM binding for messaging applications like WhatsApp. Subsequently, a new mandate has been introduced for smartphone manufacturers to pre-install a government app known as Sanchar Saathi. This app, primarily designed for tracking stolen phones, is set to be included in all phones sold in India and will also be updated on existing devices through software patches.

According to the government, all phone companies in India are required to integrate the Sanchar Saathi app within 90 days and submit a compliance report within the subsequent 30 days, totaling a 120-day timeline. This development has sparked controversy among Indian phone users, particularly on social media platforms where opinions are divided. Advocates of the Sanchar Saathi initiative view it as a user-friendly measure, while dissenting voices criticize it as a step towards digital surveillance of phone users nationwide.

Setting aside the ongoing debate, we delved into the specifics of the app itself. We explored the permissions and information requested by Sanchar Saathi. While the app is compatible with both Android and iPhone devices, it appears to have more functionality on Android, potentially due to the differing access levels granted by the two operating systems.

Sanchar Saathi necessitates access to various features on Android, such as call and SMS logs, phone call management, SMS transmission, gallery files, and full camera functionality. Additionally, the app requires authorization for several Android processes including flashlight control, running foreground services, vibration control, startup operations, Google Play license verification, network access, connection monitoring, preventing device sleep, and displaying notifications.

To evaluate the app’s capabilities, we analyzed it using the MOB-SF APK analyzer. While the overall assessment was positive (indicated by a green rating), certain areas of concern were identified, particularly regarding camera and call log access. Despite these permissions, Sanchar Saathi is not inherently risky as apps often require varying levels of access for their intended functions.

However, the extensive data access and control demanded by the app raise privacy concerns. The government’s decision to mandate the app’s installation, without the option to delete or disable it, is a contentious issue. By collaborating with phone manufacturers to preload Sanchar Saathi, the government is essentially integrating it as a core system app on both iPhone and Android platforms. Core system apps typically have elevated privileges and can be updated or modified post-installation, potentially leading to unforeseen functionalities. This situation underscores the importance of trust in governmental actions and policies.
