India’s government has officially mandated phone companies to install the Sanchar Saathi app on all phones sold in the country. The app is required to be pre-installed on both new and existing devices through software updates. This directive follows a leaked memo to phone companies, as reported by Reuters.
This move comes shortly after reports emerged about the government’s plan to implement SIM Binding on WhatsApp and other messaging apps, raising concerns about potential privacy breaches. The government aims to enhance cybersecurity and combat telecom-related threats like duplicate or spoofed IMEI numbers through the mandatory installation of the Sanchar Saathi app.
The Sanchar Saathi app, developed by the government as a mobile security platform, offers various functionalities such as blocking lost or stolen phones, verifying IMEI authenticity, reporting suspicious activities, and assisting in tracking stolen devices. However, there are apprehensions regarding the app’s extensive data access permissions, including call logs, messages, camera access, and network information.
Once installed, the app links a user’s device IMEI with a central database to facilitate blocking lost or stolen devices across all networks. It also helps identify unauthorized SIMs and counterfeit devices, resulting in the recovery of lost phones and the prevention of fraudulent mobile connections.
Despite the government portraying the app as a user-friendly tool, many Indian users are apprehensive about its mandatory nature and intrusive access to personal data. The move has sparked concerns about potential surveillance and privacy violations, with critics highlighting the risk of unauthorized monitoring by government entities or other parties with access to the app’s infrastructure.
