India’s captain for ODI and Test cricket, Shubman Gill, took a moment to appreciate the Indian women’s team’s historic victory against Australia in the ICC Women’s World Cup semi-final on October 30. The women’s team achieved a remarkable feat by successfully chasing down 339 runs, the highest ever in Women’s ODI history, securing their spot in the World Cup final against South Africa.
Gill, who is currently in Australia for the ongoing five-match T20I series, commended the Women in Blue for their resilience and determination. He expressed his admiration on his official social media account, acknowledging the remarkable performance in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025.
The 25-year-old batter is currently serving as the vice-captain under Suryakumar Yadav in the T20I series, with the second match set to take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on October 31. Gill recently led the Indian ODI team for the first time in the three-match series against Australia, which ended with a 2-1 score in favor of the hosts.
The Indian women’s semi-final victory in Navi Mumbai was highlighted by an outstanding century from Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored 127 runs and formed a crucial 167-run partnership with captain Harmanpreet Kaur. This partnership played a pivotal role in India’s successful chase, as they surpassed Australia’s total of 338 with five wickets in hand. The win silenced doubts about India’s ability to handle pressure in crucial matches, following their defeat to England earlier in the tournament.
In addition to Gill, prominent members of the men’s team such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant also extended their congratulations to the India Women’s team for their historic achievement. While Harmanpreet’s team gears up for the World Cup final against South Africa, Gill and the men’s team aim to recover from a rain-affected start in Canberra and gain momentum in Melbourne.
At present, the focus remains on the women’s team, whose extraordinary run chase has provided Indian cricket with another memorable moment to cherish.
