India is in the process of procuring a substantial number of missiles valued at approximately Rs 10,000 crore from Russia to enhance its S-400 air defense system, aiming to bolster its aerial defense capabilities. The Indian Air Force’s deployment of the S-400 system proved pivotal during a recent conflict, successfully intercepting five to six Pakistani fighter jets and a spy plane at distances exceeding 300 km within Pakistani territory. The IAF has lauded the S-400 as a significant asset in India’s air defense strategy.
Sources indicate that the Indian Air Force is planning a substantial missile acquisition to reinforce its air defense capabilities, with ongoing discussions with Russian officials. The Defense Ministry is expected to review and potentially approve the IAF’s proposal during the Defense Acquisition Council meeting scheduled for October 23.
In addition to the missile acquisition, India aims to expand its S-400 inventory by incorporating more squadrons. Out of the five squadrons agreed upon in the 2018 agreement with Russia, three have been delivered and put into operation. The delivery of the fourth squadron faced delays due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Both countries are also exploring the incorporation of additional S-400 and S-500 systems at various operational levels.
In parallel with the S-400 enhancements, India is exploring the purchase of new air-to-air missiles from Russia to augment its beyond-visual-range combat capabilities. Discussions have also centered on further advancements in the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and their variants.
