In a shift towards valuing domestic achievements for Test team re-entry, a surprising decision has stirred debate in the latest squad selection for India’s upcoming Test series against South Africa starting on November 14. Despite notable performances in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, Mohammed Shami and Karun Nair have been left out of the 15-member squad announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) this week.
Shami showcased his prowess with impressive displays for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, including seven wickets against Uttarakhand and eight wickets against Gujarat. Although he remained wicketless against Tripura, his form, control, and fitness were evident. Notably, his standout performances at Eden Gardens, the venue for the first Test against South Africa, added intrigue to the selectors’ decision.
After his game against Gujarat, Shami reaffirmed his dedication to national duty, emphasizing his commitment to staying fit and contributing to the Indian team whenever needed. Despite the challenges of returning from injury, he believes he still has much to offer at the highest level.
On the other hand, Karun Nair, who struggled during the England tour earlier this year and was subsequently dropped to domestic cricket, made a strong comeback in the Ranji Trophy this season. His significant scores, including 233 against Kerala, an unbeaten 174 against Goa, and 83 against Saurashtra, positioned him as a reliable middle-order option. Yet, the selectors opted for younger talents over experienced players.
The selection panel’s emphasis on youth like Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal as batting backups, and Sai Sudharsan for the No. 3 position, suggests a long-term strategy focused on nurturing future talent, even if it means overlooking established performers in the current scenario.
