“India Defends Energy Partnership with Russia Amid US Pressure”

After US President Donald Trump stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him India would cease purchasing oil from Russia, the Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, emphasized that India’s energy collaboration with Moscow aligns with its national interests. Alipov highlighted that the decision to continue importing Russian oil lies with the Indian government, which prioritizes the country’s national interests in energy cooperation.

Following Trump’s claim, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak reiterated Moscow’s dedication to its partners. Novak expressed confidence in the ongoing collaboration with partners despite external statements. Additionally, Ambassador Alipov mentioned the intense preparations for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to India, expecting significant agreements in various sectors.

In response to Trump’s remarks, New Delhi reaffirmed that its energy choices prioritize consumer interests, emphasizing the importance of stable prices and supply security. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that India’s oil and gas import policies aim to safeguard consumer interests in a volatile energy landscape, focusing on stable energy prices and diversified sourcing to meet market demands.

While Washington has urged India to reduce oil imports from Russia, citing support for Moscow’s economy and the conflict in Ukraine, Trump acknowledged the gradual nature of India’s transition away from Russian oil. He noted that the process may take time but believed that the shift was underway. India currently imports about one-third of its crude oil from Russia, and efforts to diversify sourcing are ongoing to address market conditions.
