Visiting any retail outlet, grocery store, or local convenience store nowadays, one can notice a common trend expressed in various ways. The impact of GST 2.0 is evident in reduced prices across a wide range of products such as scooters, entry-level cars, household goods, packaged foods, and essential medications.
With the decrease in prices, consumers have quickly resumed their spending habits, leading to a surge in shopping activities.
During the festive season, foot traffic has increased, retailers of appliances have witnessed a rise in early-quarter demand, and dealers of two-wheelers have experienced a surge in inquiries. Additionally, rural distributors have reported higher sales of everyday FMCG products.
The previously sluggish consumption pattern seems to have regained momentum. The current question on everyone’s mind is whether this increase in retail activity will translate to positive movements in the stock market.
EXPERT PERSPECTIVES
Market analysts suggest that GST 2.0 presents a favorable environment for sectors closely tied to household expenditure, such as automotive, FMCG, real estate, consumer durables, and discretionary retail.
Akshay Sapru, the Group CEO of FundsIndia, hails GST 2.0 as “a significant reform that bolsters India’s consumption dynamics.” He anticipates that it will enhance affordability, boost demand across various sectors like automotive, FMCG, insurance, and real estate, thereby supporting profit growth in the forthcoming quarters.
However, Sapru also cautions that achieving a Sensex level of 1 lakh by 2026 will require more than just tax adjustments. Sustained capital expenditure momentum, global economic stability, and continued investor engagement will be equally crucial.
Research firms are beginning to quantify the potential impact. PL Capital and other brokerage houses estimate that GST 2.0 could contribute 50 to 70 basis points to GDP growth through increased demand in electronics, textiles, automotive, and rural consumption.
Kotak analysts characterize the streamlined tax slabs as essentially a tax reduction for households, typically resulting in higher spending on significant categories.
According to JP Morgan’s recent analysis, GST 2.0 might partially shield Indian equities from external challenges like tariffs and oil-related uncertainties, though not entirely.
IS GST 2.0 A MARKET MOVER?
Analysts caution against expecting an automatic market upswing. Independent research entities, including Wright Research, highlight that valuations are elevated, and profits must increase significantly for a broader and sustainable uptrend. While GST 2.0 enhances the economic landscape, sustained market growth will require improved margins, stronger cash flows, and a stable global context.
For investors, the key takeaway is simple. GST 2.0 strengthens the case for sectors directly benefiting from increased consumer spending due to price reductions. Industries like automotive, consumer durables, cement, real estate-related companies, and selected FMCG brands could witness clearer profit prospects if demand remains robust.
