New Zealand’s cricket star Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from T20 International cricket just four months ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Williamson, who has been a long-standing captain of the Blackcaps, disclosed his decision on November 2, stating that he will focus on playing Test and ODI matches going forward.
With 2575 runs in 93 matches, Williamson leaves the T20I format as New Zealand’s highest run-scorer. After scaling back his involvement following the 2024 T20 World Cup, Williamson entrusts the team’s leadership to Mitchell Santner.
During his tenure, Williamson captained the New Zealand team in 75 T20Is, guiding them to consistent performances, including reaching the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2016 and 2022 and the final in 2021.
While expressing gratitude for his T20 cricket journey, Williamson emphasized that his retirement provides clarity to the team as they prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup in India. He praised Santner’s leadership qualities and expressed confidence in the team’s T20 talent.
Although he will continue playing in T20 franchise leagues worldwide, Williamson has transitioned into a strategic advisory role with the Lucknow Super Giants, marking the conclusion of his playing career in the Indian Premier League.
