Chandigarh was filled with festivities on Friday as Amanjot Kaur and Harleen Deol, the Women’s World Cup-winning cricketers, were warmly welcomed back from Mumbai. The two standout players from Punjab, integral to India’s successful women’s cricket team, were met with traditional gifts, cheers, and the rhythmic beats of drums as jubilant families and supporters gathered to honor their remarkable achievement.
Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, the team made history by clinching India’s first-ever 50-over Women’s World Cup title with a 52-run victory over South Africa in the final match held in Navi Mumbai. This triumph signified a significant milestone for Indian women’s cricket, and the exuberant celebrations in Chandigarh epitomized the pride and elation surrounding this historic win.
Amanjot Kaur expressed deep emotions during her homecoming, attributing the victory to the entire nation and Punjab. Reflecting on the intense journey, she mentioned, “We didn’t sleep after the semi-final victory over Australia, and even after winning the final, sleep eluded us.”
Harleen Deol, a standout middle-order batter for India, acknowledged her family’s unwavering support, emphasizing the importance of empowering girls to pursue their dreams. She urged parents to encourage their daughters to follow their passions and strive diligently, highlighting the team’s strong belief in their success and ultimate triumph.
The celebrations continued outside the airport as Amanjot’s relatives and local fans joyously danced in celebration. Her cousin fondly recalled incidents from Amanjot’s childhood, reminiscing about her spirited cricket games with neighborhood boys that occasionally led to broken windows. However, the family’s steadfast support and belief in Amanjot’s potential never wavered, anticipating her future success.
Following a felicitation ceremony, Amanjot and Harleen were escorted home in a grand open-top vehicle, accompanied by enthusiastic family members amid lively cheers and music.
Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the victorious team at his residence in New Delhi. Commending the players for their resilience and comeback after a challenging phase marked by three consecutive defeats, Modi praised their determination and poise. In a light-hearted moment, he commended Amanjot for her exceptional catch during the final match, sparking laughter among the team members.
