Apple is gearing up to release its inaugural foldable iPhone in 2026, entering the foldable smartphone market alongside competitors like Samsung and Google. Reports suggest that this move could position Apple as a leader in the foldable segment, potentially capturing up to 34% market share.
Despite the high anticipated price tag of $2,400 (approximately Rs 2,15,000), the iPhone Fold is projected to account for 22% of unit sales and 34% of the total market value in its first year, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC). This launch is expected to drive growth and competition in the foldable smartphone sector, which is projected to experience a significant 30% year-over-year increase in 2026, a substantial jump from the previous 6% forecast.
The introduction of Apple into the foldable smartphone market is viewed as a pivotal moment that could spur development and rivalry among established brands. Other notable launches anticipated to contribute to this growth include Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Trifold and new models from Huawei. However, Apple’s entry later in the year is seen as a transformative event in the foldable category.
The iPhone Fold is set to debut in fall 2026, likely coinciding with the release of the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. It is rumored to feature an inward-folding design resembling a book, equipped with a 5.5-inch exterior display and a 7.8-inch interior display. Speculations about the device also include features such as an under-display selfie camera, a hinge to minimize creases, and the use of the A20 Pro chipset, similar to the one expected in the iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple is speculated to include a minimum 5,400mAh battery, surpassing the capacities of most existing foldable devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
