New developments have surfaced in the enigmatic demise of Akeel Akhtar, the son of former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa, as authorities are now scrutinizing details from his personal journal and potential ties to narcotics.
ACP Vikram Nehra, leading the Special Investigation Team (SIT), disclosed that Akeel’s family recently provided his diary. Nehra mentioned, “We have taken possession of it. The diary contains entries that align closely with what he conveyed in the viral video.”
The officer highlighted that the diary contains numerous entries from various dates and that certain items discovered at the site appear to be associated with drugs. These items have been dispatched to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for analysis.
Nehra explained that the investigation is in its preliminary phase, focusing on examining the crime scene. He noted that Akeel’s electronic devices, including his cellphone, are yet to be recovered and efforts are underway to secure them from the family promptly to advance the inquiry.
Aged 35, Akeel was the offspring of former Punjab DGP (Human Rights) Mohammad Mustafa and former minister Razia Sultana. In August, Akeel was found deceased at his residence in Panchkula. While his family attributed it to a drug overdose, a complaint lodged by their neighbor, Shamshuddin Chaudhary, alleged foul play citing a video recorded by Akeel shortly before his passing.
In the video, lasting 16 minutes, Akeel accused his father of engaging in an extramarital affair with his wife and implicated his mother and sister in a purported conspiracy to harm him or falsely implicate him. He claimed he had been unjustly detained, compelled into rehabilitation, and stripped of his business earnings.
Subsequently, another video emerged where Akeel retracted his accusations, labeling them as baseless and mentioning he suffered from schizophrenia. The video prompted the filing of an FIR against Mustafa, Sultana, their daughter, and daughter-in-law under relevant sections of the law.
The situation has evolved into a political controversy, with questions arising about the motivations of complainant Chaudhary due to his past political affiliations. Mustafa has refuted all accusations as untrue, emphasizing his son’s prolonged struggles with substance abuse and mental health challenges. He labeled the complainant as a deceitful individual manipulated by others.
