The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has declared that there will be no more extensions granted for linking Aadhaar with the Universal Account Number (UAN). Consequently, employers will only be able to submit the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) for employees whose Aadhaar is correctly associated and verified with their UAN.
The recent extension deadline that concluded on October 31 was confirmed as the final one as per a circular released by the EPFO on December 1, 2025. The regulation mandating the linking of Aadhaar with UAN for ECR filing has been in effect since June 2021. EPFO specified that only members with a validated Aadhaar linked to their UAN will be considered for ECR filing starting from November 2025.
For those unfamiliar, a UAN is a 12-digit identification number issued to salaried individuals to facilitate the management of their provident fund across different employments, simplifying PF transfers during job changes.
The last extension, granted through a communication dated October 28, was limited to specific groups, including all seven North Eastern states and certain industries like beedi-making, construction, tea, coffee, rubber, cashewnut, and other plantation sectors.
EPFO highlighted that it has offered multiple extensions in the past four years and noted a significant reduction in pending Aadhaar-UAN cases. To prevent further delays, the organization has decided not to extend the deadline again. Instructing all zonal and regional offices to conduct awareness campaigns for employers to complete any pending verifications promptly.
In essence, EPFO has explicitly stated that ECR filing from November 2025 onwards will be permissible only for members with verified Aadhaar-UAN linkage, without any exceptions.
