Apple and Intel are reportedly in talks for a significant collaboration that may involve Intel manufacturing Apple’s future Mac and iPad processors by 2027. This potential partnership comes after Apple switched from Intel processors to its own M-series chips over four years ago.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple has signed a non-disclosure agreement with Intel to access its cutting-edge 18AP process design kit (PDK), based on 2nm manufacturing technology. This agreement would not make Intel Apple’s chip designer again but rather a contract manufacturer alongside TSMC.
Apple is currently evaluating Intel’s 18AP 0.9.1 GA PDK to model an entry-level M-series chip expected to power upcoming MacBook Air and iPad Pro models. If Intel’s PDK 1.0/1.1 meets Apple’s criteria for performance and efficiency, mass production of Apple’s next M-series SoC on Intel’s 18AP node could begin by 2027.
Intel’s 18A family, featuring RibbonFET gate-all-around transistors and PowerVia backside power delivery, is designed to enhance performance and energy efficiency. For Apple, this collaboration is part of a strategy to diversify its supply chain and reduce reliance on a single foundry, aligning with global geopolitical trends and the need for a stable supply chain.
This deal could be a pivotal moment for Intel’s foundry revival plan, aiming to break even by 2027. Improved yields on Intel’s 18A architecture suggest progress towards this goal, with potential for securing Apple as a flagship customer validating Intel’s turnaround and competitiveness in the semiconductor industry.
While the decision ultimately hinges on Intel’s ability to meet Apple’s stringent requirements, both companies are cautiously optimistic about the potential collaboration. If successful, Apple could have a second manufacturing partner for its custom silicon, leading to Intel-manufactured Apple chips in MacBook Airs and iPads by 2027.
