Apple is set to make its debut in the foldable smartphone market next year with the anticipated iPhone fold. This upcoming device will mark Apple’s first foray into the foldable category and is expected to introduce several groundbreaking features for the Cupertino-based tech giant, including having both the smallest and largest screens ever seen on an iPhone.
According to information from tipster Digital Chat Station, the initial details suggest that Apple’s foldable iPhone will sport a compact 5.25-inch cover display, making it the smallest screen size ever seen on a modern iPhone. For comparison, the iPhone 13 Mini offered a 5.4-inch display.
In contrast to many competing foldable devices with book-style designs, such as Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold and the Oppo Find N5, which feature larger cover displays measuring 6.4 inches and 6.62 inches respectively, Apple’s reported 5.25-inch external panel is notably more petite. The original Samsung Galaxy Fold, for instance, had a 4.6-inch cover display, while the latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 boasts a larger 6.5-inch external screen.
Upon unfolding the iPhone fold, a significant shift occurs, revealing an expansive 7.58-inch inner display, surpassing any screen size previously seen on an iPhone. To put it into perspective, the iPhone 17 Pro Max features a 6.9-inch OLED display.
The leaked information indicates Apple’s focus on slimming down the device as much as possible. Rather than incorporating 3D Face ID components or a 3D ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor, Apple is expected to opt for a side-mounted Touch ID sensor to reduce the device’s thickness.
Moreover, the internal display is rumored to house an under-display camera, enabling the front-facing camera to remain hidden beneath the screen when not in use. On the other hand, the external display is likely to adopt a punch-hole camera design, utilizing a Hole-In-Active-Area (HIAA) approach to minimize unused space. Details on whether Apple’s Dynamic Island feature will be integrated into these displays remain unclear from the leak.
In addition to the selfie cameras, the iPhone fold is speculated to feature a 48-megapixel dual rear camera setup and is expected to be powered by the yet-to-be-announced A20 Pro chipset, the same as the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models.
Apple is anticipated to unveil its inaugural foldable device in September 2026, alongside the release of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Reports suggest that the pricing for the foldable iPhone could be around $2,400 (approximately Rs 2,15,000) in the US.
