Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav stirred controversy with his remarks on Diwali celebrations, drawing comparisons to the festive atmosphere of Christmas worldwide. During a public address, Yadav suggested emulating the extended illumination seen in many cities during Christmas, questioning the expenditure and effort put into traditional Diwali lighting. His comments elicited strong reactions from BJP members and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP).
National spokesperson Vinod Bansal criticized Yadav for favoring Christmas over Diwali and accused him of prioritizing foreign customs over Indian traditions. Bansal condemned Yadav for allegedly promoting illegal religious conversions and disrespecting Hindu festivities. He further questioned Yadav’s commitment to Diwali rituals and lamp-lighting ceremonies, insinuating a lack of respect for Hindu customs.
Madhya Pradesh cabinet minister Vishwas Sarang joined the criticism, questioning Yadav’s stance on Diwali and implying a possible religious conversion within his family. Sarang denounced Yadav’s comments as disrespectful to the Prajapati community, who craft lamps for Diwali celebrations. He highlighted the importance of honoring artisans who bring light and joy to households during the festival.
The remarks by Akhilesh Yadav have sparked a heated debate, with critics accusing him of undermining Hindu traditions and cultural practices in favor of foreign influences.
