Sunil Chhetri, the renowned footballer, appears to have prolonged his association with Bengaluru FC. In a promotional video hinting at his contract extension, the 41-year-old star urged the club to make an official announcement regarding the new deal. The video concludes with a caption that reads, ‘Chhetri. Bengaluru. Simply meant to be.’
Having been a key figure in the team for several years, Chhetri initially joined Bengaluru FC in 2013 for a two-year tenure. After a brief stint with Mumbai City FC, he returned to Bengaluru in 2016 on loan, later making his move permanent in 2017.
Chhetri holds the record for the most goals scored in the history of the Indian Super League, with 65 goals to his name, surpassing Bartholomew Ogbeche by four goals. Despite the current suspension of the league due to a dispute between the All India Football Federation and Football Sports Development Limited, Chhetri’s achievements remain unmatched.
Bengaluru FC’s last match was in April, where they were eliminated in the first round of the Kalinga Super Cup by Inter Kashi. The team is scheduled to participate in the upcoming Goa Super Cup on October 29.
Earlier this year, amid the league’s suspension and financial uncertainties, Bengaluru FC took the difficult decision to halt salaries for players and staff, including Chhetri. This move was prompted by the delayed announcement of the next season’s ISL by the AIFF. The club expressed its concern for the well-being of its personnel and their families while awaiting a resolution.
