“Trump Warns of Potential 155% Tariffs on Chinese Goods”

President Trump issued a warning on Monday, stating that tariffs on Chinese goods could potentially reach 155% by November 1 if a fair deal is not reached with President Xi Jinping. This announcement reignited trade tensions between the United States and China, the two largest economies globally.

During a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the White House, Trump also signed a significant minerals agreement as part of efforts to enhance supply chains and reduce reliance on China. Trump emphasized that China has been paying substantial amounts in tariffs, currently at 55%, with the possibility of an increase to 155% if a deal is not made.

The US President highlighted that his administration aims to establish fair trade agreements, especially with China, to address past instances of countries taking advantage of the US. Trump reiterated his stance against unfair trade practices, underscoring the need for reciprocal actions in trade relationships.

Reports surfaced indicating that China did not import any US soybeans in September, diverting purchases to South America due to ongoing trade tensions. Trump had previously announced plans to implement 100% tariffs on Chinese goods and impose export restrictions on critical software starting November 1, in addition to the existing 55% tariffs on Chinese imports.

Despite the trade disputes, Trump mentioned maintaining a good relationship with President Xi, expressing willingness to negotiate for mutual benefits. He confirmed an upcoming meeting with Xi in South Korea, aiming to achieve a fair and beneficial trade deal for both nations and the global economy.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that US and Chinese officials are scheduled to engage in discussions in Malaysia, indicating ongoing efforts to address trade issues. Reports suggested that Trump briefly considered canceling the face-to-face meeting with Xi, the first since his return to office.
