Santosh Lathar, the spouse of Assistant Sub-Inspector Sandeep Kumar Lathar, who was reported to have died by suicide recently, is seeking a fair investigation into her husband’s demise. She expressed disbelief in her husband’s alleged act, stating his courage wouldn’t allow such an action. Appealing to the Haryana administration for a transparent inquiry, she emphasized her sole wish is for justice to prevail. The emotional appeal was made to the media, with Santosh visibly distraught and struggling to maintain composure.
The body of Sandeep Lathar was discovered near a tubewell on the Rohtak–Panipat road earlier in the week. A suicide note and a video lasting six minutes were left behind by the cyber cell officer, implicating the late Inspector General Puran Kumar and his wife, senior bureaucrat Amneet Kumar, in corrupt practices. Sandeep alleged he was coerced into taking his own life, following unexpected transfer orders that led to Puran Kumar’s suicide on October 7. The suicide notes also highlighted the unjust detention of Puran Kumar’s PSO, head constable Sushil Kumar, who was reportedly subjected to intense interrogation.
In response to allegations of bribery involving Sushil Kumar soliciting funds on behalf of IG Puran Kumar, a liquor contractor filed a complaint accusing him of seeking a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh.
Despite the tragic circumstances, ASI Sandeep Lathar’s son showcased strength by expressing pride in his father and determination to fulfill his aspirations. Following Santosh Lathar’s complaint, an FIR was lodged by the Rohtak police, citing abetment of suicide and criminal conspiracy. A special investigation team (SIT) comprising six members has been formed to investigate the Puran Kumar case, with ongoing inquiries into Sandeep Lathar’s death and alleged involvement in the incidents.
In light of the gravity of the accusations and the interconnected nature of the two suicides, authorities have pledged a thorough investigation. Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur has been placed on leave, and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijraniya has assumed his role.
Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar extended support to the grieving family, promising a government job for Lathar’s wife and assistance for the children’s education. He urged the public to refrain from politicizing or communalizing the tragedies, labeling both incidents as “very unfortunate.”
The case has shed light on systemic issues such as corruption, harassment, and potential discrimination within the Haryana police, along with allegations of abuse of power and extortion. The deaths have sparked inquiries into administrative procedures and the challenges faced by officers in the Rohtak region.
