“Republican NYC Mayoral Candidate Defies Pressure to Exit Race”

Curtis Sliwa, a Republican candidate for New York City mayor, faces an uphill battle in the predominantly Democratic metropolis. Despite mounting pressure to withdraw and consolidate the race into a two-way competition, Sliwa remains resolute in his decision to stay in the race, potentially impacting the chances of the frontrunner, a Democratic socialist.

Sliwa, renowned for founding the Guardian Angels subway patrol group in the late 1970s, has disclosed receiving various job offers, including a lucrative $10 million proposition, in exchange for stepping down.

In a recent interview with AFP, Sliwa pointed fingers at his second-place rival, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, alleging that there were multiple offers orchestrated by Cuomo’s associates, which he perceived as unethical and potentially criminal. Cuomo’s office swiftly dismissed the accusations, branding Sliwa as a “liar and a fraudster.”

Despite trailing far behind in third place with 15 percent support in the latest polls, Sliwa remains steadfast in his refusal to withdraw from the race, citing inducements and security threats as reasons for his unwavering stance.

Critics of Mamdani, the current frontrunner, argue that Sliwa’s exit could bolster opposition against the self-proclaimed socialist candidate, potentially rallying support behind Cuomo. The absence of Mayor Eric Adams from the race has notably influenced Cuomo’s standing, although Adams has not officially endorsed any candidate.

Sliwa’s resolve to stay in the race has remained unshaken, even in the face of ridicule from figures like Donald Trump, who belittled his candidacy by questioning his prominence and mocking his affinity for rescuing cats with his wife. Sliwa clarified that his motivation for running is to serve the city, emphasizing his dedication to the well-being of its inhabitants.

A self-proclaimed populist Republican advocate for the working class, Sliwa established the Guardian Angels as a volunteer group in 1979, which faced criticism from detractors labeling it as a “militia” during its patrols in the perilous New York subway of the 1980s.

Having weathered controversies, including admissions of embellishing his group’s achievements and surviving a near-fatal attack in 1992, Sliwa’s foray into politics has been peppered with challenges and triumphs. With aspirations of reshaping the mayoral race dynamics, Sliwa aims to leverage his position to influence outcomes and potentially secure a role in City Hall.

Known for his outspoken nature, Sliwa holds contrasting opinions of his opponents, highlighting Mamdani’s grassroots support tactics and Cuomo’s associations with affluent circles. Sliwa’s candidacy hinges on a potential game-changing moment that could elevate his standing or position him as a significant player in the political landscape, as suggested by political science experts.
