WestJet to Revamp Aircraft Seating with New Layout

WestJet, the Canadian budget airline, is set to revamp its Boeing 737-8 MAX and 737-800 aircraft to introduce a new seating layout. The updated design will include a standard economy class with seats that have fixed recline positions.

The redesigned aircraft will feature three cabin classes: a premium cabin with 12 adjustable recline seats, an extended Comfort section, and a standard economy class where most seats will have fixed recline angles, eliminating the option for passengers to lean back.

WestJet’s decision to overhaul its cabin configuration is part of a broader strategy aimed at accommodating a wider range of traveler budgets. However, critics argue that the airline’s primary focus is on revenue generation rather than ensuring passenger comfort.

The airline promises a refreshed cabin environment with enhanced cushioning, adjustable headrests, and a bright, airy atmosphere. Economy passengers will no longer have the option to adjust their seat recline and will have to settle for slightly reclined fixed seats unless they choose to upgrade to premium sections.

Samantha Taylor, WestJet’s executive vice president and chief experience officer, defended the changes, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to offering diverse seating preferences to passengers. Aviation management expert John Gradek, however, criticized WestJet’s motives, labeling the new fees as a “cash grab” strategy to maximize airline profits.

The redesigned seating layout allows WestJet to add an additional row of seats, potentially increasing passenger capacity and revenue per flight. This change may impact legroom in the standard economy class, particularly towards the rear of the aircraft.

Established in 1996, WestJet operates a fleet of around 200 aircraft and serves over 100 destinations across North America, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, and Asia. The airline plans to introduce the new cabin design on its first of 43 aircraft in October 2025.
