US Treasury Secretary Criticizes China’s Trade Delegation

Expressing the increasing dissatisfaction of the US towards China, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized the Chinese trade negotiator for showing up in Washington without an invitation and displaying erratic behavior. Bessent emphasized that it appeared to be a case of “China against the rest of the world” as he condemned Beijing’s limitations on rare earth exports.

This development occurs amid a deepening trade conflict between the US and China. President Trump has proposed an additional 100% tariff on Chinese products following Beijing’s imposition of new regulations on the export of rare earth technologies.

UNSCHEDULED VISIT OF CHINESE OFFICIAL

The Chinese trade negotiator referenced by Bessent is Li Chenggang, who was designated as China’s vice-minister of commerce and trade envoy in April, shortly after President Trump announced additional tariffs.

In August, Li Chenggang traveled to Washington for discussions with US commerce and trade officials. The visit took place as both countries aimed to finalize a broader trade agreement by a November 10 deadline. The US has postponed tariffs on Chinese imports of up to 145% until then.

Bessent stated that Li’s visit was not solicited by the Trump administration.

“There is a low-ranking official in the Chinese trade team who is unpredictable, identified as Li Chenggang,” remarked the treasury secretary.

“In August, Li Chenggang threatened to disrupt the global economy if the US imposed charges on Chinese ship docking. It now appears to be a struggle between China and the international community,” he added. Since October 14, both nations have initiated higher port fees on each other’s cargo vessels.

ASSERTIVE REMARKS

The public criticism is a rare occurrence in global diplomacy, as negotiators usually refrain from calling each other out by name. This indicates a diminishing level of patience from the US towards China.

“Perhaps he sees himself as a wolf warrior,” Bessent
