Uma Chetry Shines in India’s Women’s ODI Debut

India’s Women’s ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh witnessed a significant moment for Assam cricket as Uma Chetry marked her ODI debut. Chetry became the second woman cricketer from Assam to play in an ODI for India, following Ritu Dhrub, who represented India in both ODIs and T20Is during 2013-14.

Having already featured in seven Women’s T20Is for India, Uma Chetry, representing Assam, brings valuable experience from the shorter format to the ODI stage. Her consistent performances in domestic cricket earned her a spot in the World Cup squad. The 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter last played internationally against the West Indies in December 2024 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

India made three changes to their playing XI for the game, including Chetry, Radha Yadav, and Amanjot Kaur, replacing Richa Ghosh, Kranti Gaud, and Sneh Rana. Despite a brief delay due to rain, India, opting to bowl first, aimed to finish the league stage strongly before their semifinal against defending champions Australia. Chetry’s debut signifies a milestone for Assam cricket alongside Riyan Parag, the first male cricketer from the state to debut in ODIs in August 2024 against Sri Lanka. Her journey is expected to inspire aspiring cricketers in Assam, highlighting the sport’s increasing presence in India’s northeast.

The playing XI for India included captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, and wicketkeeper Uma Chetry. Bangladesh, led by Nigar Sultana, featured players like Sharmin Akhter, Sobhana Mostary, and Nahida Akter Nishi.

As Chetry begins her ODI career, cricket enthusiasts from Assam and across India eagerly anticipate her contribution to the legacy of Indian women’s cricket.
