US President Donald Trump praised Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir as remarkable individuals, committing to swiftly resolve the Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict. Trump made these comments during the signing of the Thailand-Cambodia peace agreement at the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He also mentioned that his administration had successfully concluded eight wars in just eight months, with one conflict remaining.
Trump expressed confidence in his ability to mediate conflicts and emphasized his administration’s unprecedented track record in ending conflicts. He highlighted the significance of fostering good relationships and friendships through conflict resolution efforts, such as the Thailand-Cambodia peace deal.
Earlier in the Oval Office, Trump recalled Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Washington, where Sharif had praised Trump for allegedly saving millions of lives by preventing a conflict between India and Pakistan. Trump reiterated his commitment to peace-building and emphasized the historic nature of his conflict resolution achievements.
Additionally, Shehbaz Sharif credited Trump for averting a potential war with India at the Gaza Peace Summit and endorsed Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize. Trump responded positively to Sharif’s accolades, acknowledging the importance of their diplomatic efforts.
The Pakistani Prime Minister had previously met Trump during his visit to the US for the UN General Assembly in September. Meanwhile, Pakistan and Afghan officials were set to engage in further discussions in Turkey to address border tensions and combat terrorism originating from Afghan territory. The initial talks in Doha had resulted in a temporary peace along the border, leading to plans for continued discussions in Istanbul to address mutual security concerns.
