US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had committed to halting oil purchases from Russia, a move he described as significant in his efforts to isolate Moscow amid the conflict in Ukraine. Trump expressed his discontent with India’s reliance on Russian oil, stating that he had raised the issue with PM Modi.
During a press briefing at the White House, Trump revealed that PM Modi assured him of India’s decision to cease oil imports from Russia. Trump emphasized the importance of this decision and indicated his intention to urge China to follow suit.
Despite tensions over energy policies, Trump characterized PM Modi as a close ally and emphasized their strong relationship. However, India has not confirmed Trump’s assertion regarding the cessation of Russian oil imports.
Trump highlighted that securing India’s commitment was part of his strategy to diminish Moscow’s energy revenue and hinted at pressuring China to take similar action. He expressed optimism about progress in resolving the conflict, noting that India’s shift away from Russian oil would facilitate diplomatic efforts and potentially lead to the resumption of normal trade relations post-war.
Trump’s statements align with the heightened pressure from the US to enforce sanctions against Russia and disrupt funding to its military. India, on the other hand, has defended its Russian oil imports as essential for energy security and economic stability, emphasizing that decisions are made in the national interest.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar previously defended India’s oil imports, dismissing criticism and asserting that India complies with international regulations while meeting domestic energy requirements. Despite global sanctions on Russian energy, India has become a significant buyer of Russian crude, accounting for a substantial portion of its oil imports.
India maintains that its purchases adhere to G7 price regulations on Russian oil and align with international standards. The country emphasizes its commitment to meeting energy needs while following all necessary guidelines.
