Hamas has returned the bodies of four deceased Israeli hostages in response to Israeli threats of reducing humanitarian aid to Gaza and warnings from US President Donald Trump about potential violence if the group does not disarm. This comes after Hamas had previously returned four other coffins, with some hostages still unaccounted for. The Red Cross has confirmed the receipt of the four bodies handed over on Tuesday for transfer to Israeli authorities.
In light of Hamas’s violation of the ceasefire, Israel has taken measures such as restricting aid and delaying the opening of the southern border crossing with Egypt. Gaza is facing ongoing challenges including food shortages, damaged infrastructure, and limited humanitarian assistance.
Following the recent partial withdrawal of Israeli forces, Hamas has reinforced its presence in urban areas. The group has stationed fighters along aid routes, targeted collaborators and criminals, and begun the process of clearing rubble and repairing infrastructure necessary for humanitarian aid distribution.
Violent clashes between Hamas fighters and rival factions, coupled with continued Israeli airstrikes, have resulted in additional casualties in the region. Despite the ceasefire following two years of conflict, Israeli authorities insist that the conflict cannot be resolved until Hamas disarms and relinquishes control of Gaza.
Meanwhile, Gaza grapples with issues such as food scarcity, infrastructure destruction, and delayed aid distribution. Efforts to establish an international military presence or a new governance system for Gaza have faced obstacles, with Israeli leaders emphasizing that the conflict resolution hinges on Hamas disarming and ceding control of the enclave.
