President Trump once again lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as a “great man” who holds affection for Trump. Trump emphasized that he did not wish for his remarks to be misinterpreted or detrimental to PM Modi’s political standing.
The recent commendation by Trump followed his assertion that PM Modi had promised to cease oil imports from Russia, which Trump viewed as a significant move in his campaign to isolate Moscow amidst the Ukraine conflict.
During a press interaction regarding PM Modi’s recent meeting with US envoy-designate Sergio Gor, Trump praised Modi as a remarkable leader who has assured him of India’s discontinuation of Russian oil purchases. Trump expressed admiration for India’s political stability under PM Modi’s leadership, contrasting it with the frequent changes in leadership observed in the country.
The meeting between Sergio Gor and PM Modi occurred on October 11 in New Delhi, where Gor presented a signed photograph of himself and Trump at the White House to PM Modi, with Trump’s inscription stating, “Mr. Prime Minister, you are great.”
This meeting took place amidst strained relations between the US and India after President Trump imposed 50% tariffs on India over its persistent Russian oil acquisitions, signaling a thaw in the previously tense ties between the two nations.
Trump disclosed that PM Modi had personally assured him of India’s commitment to cease purchasing oil from Russia, a move aimed at curbing Moscow’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict. Trump expressed satisfaction with this development and urged for similar actions from China.
The Indian government has not issued an official response to Trump’s statements regarding PM Modi’s promise to halt Russian oil imports.
