President Donald Trump announced the official commencement of the construction of a new White House Ballroom on Monday. The President described the addition as significant, exquisite, and privately financed. Trump shared on Truth Social that the groundbreaking on the White House grounds signifies the realization of a dream spanning over a century.
Trump expressed his delight, stating, “I am pleased to announce that ground has been broken on the White House grounds to build the new, big, beautiful White House Ballroom.” He highlighted the historical significance of the project, mentioning that for more than 150 years, every President has aspired to have a Ballroom at the White House for hosting grand events and State Visits. Trump emphasized that he is proud to be the first President to initiate this essential project without any cost to American taxpayers.
The upcoming ballroom, intended to be funded by patriotic individuals, prominent American corporations, and the President himself, is expected to cover an area of 90,000 square feet and have the capacity to host up to 999 guests. This capacity is five times larger than the current largest venue at the White House, the East Room.
In related news, demolition work has commenced on a section of the East Wing, traditionally used as the First Lady’s workspace, to pave the way for the construction of the ballroom. Images released by The Washington Post displayed heavy machinery demolishing the East Wing façade, resulting in broken windows and debris scattered around the area.
Although the White House asserts that National Capital Planning Commission approval is not necessary for demolition activities, the agency typically oversees construction projects on federal properties within Washington. The Chairman of the Commission, Will Scharf, also serves as Trump’s staff secretary and senior aide.
Reportedly, site clearance work began in September, and Trump anticipates the completion of the project before his term concludes in January 2029.
