Simone Tata, a key figure in the evolution of Lakme into a prominent brand in the Indian cosmetics industry and the establishment of the Westside retail chain, passed away at the age of 95 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai following a short illness. Originally from Geneva, Switzerland, Simone first visited India as a tourist in 1953, where she met and later married Naval Tata in 1955, choosing Mumbai as her permanent residence.
Taking on the role of chairperson at Lakme in the early 1980s, Simone Tata guided the brand through a pivotal phase, propelling it to nationwide recognition. The Tata Group eventually divested Lakme to Hindustan Unilever in 1996.
Following the sale of Lakme, Simone Tata utilized the proceeds to launch Westside under Trent, which swiftly emerged as one of India’s most prosperous department store chains, solidifying her standing as a trailblazer in the Indian retail sector.
Aside from her business endeavors, Simone Tata was actively involved in charitable efforts, notably supporting initiatives at the Sir Ratan Tata Institute. The Tata family expressed their appreciation for her role in advancing Lakme and pioneering fashion retail in India through Westside, highlighting her optimistic outlook and unwavering determination.
Funeral services for Simone Tata are set to take place on Saturday morning at the Cathedral of the Holy Name in Colaba, with a mass scheduled for 11 am.
