In the seven seasons of the Indian Premier League, Shivam Dube has only bowled a total of 20.4 overs. The Mumbai all-rounder has been limited to just three overs in the past three seasons due to the Impact Player rule, which has negatively affected all-rounders lacking equal proficiency in both batting and bowling. Initially labeled as a middle-overs big-hitter, Dube’s situation took a positive turn with the support of the team management, particularly under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, providing him with the much-needed backing, confidence, and freedom to enhance his bowling skills.
Since Gambhir assumed the role of head coach for the Indian team last year, Dube has significantly increased his T20I bowling workload to 26 overs, representing nearly 40 percent of his total overs bowled in his six-year international career. A significant display of trust was evident when Dube was entrusted with the new ball in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan following Hardik Pandya’s injury, showcasing India’s confidence in his abilities despite being primarily considered a batsman.
Transitioning to the ongoing five-match T20I series in Australia, Dube has assumed the role of the primary medium-pace bowling all-rounder in the absence of Hardik, with Nitish Kumar Reddy sidelined due to injury in the initial matches. Following India’s 48-run victory in the fourth T20I on the Gold Coast, Dube credited the coaching trio of Gambhir, bowling coach Morne Morkel, and captain Suryakumar Yadav for elevating his bowling prowess.
Expressing his dedication to improving his bowling skills, Dube acknowledged the invaluable guidance from Morkel, Gambhir, and Yadav in formulating effective bowling strategies tailored to match conditions. His performance in the fourth T20I reflected his progress, claiming two crucial wickets by executing well-devised plans that led to the dismissals of Mitchell Marsh and Tim David.
Despite being a work in progress, Dube has made notable strides, securing three wickets in the series so far. Being preferred over specialist bowler Washington Sundar in recent matches underscores the team management’s belief in his capabilities.
