Russia recently conducted extensive nuclear training exercises following the postponement of a planned second summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the conflict in Ukraine. The drills included missile launches from various platforms like ground, submarines, and aircraft, showcasing the country’s intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities.
The Kremlin released video footage of General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff, briefing President Putin on the exercises. Russia’s Defense Ministry also confirmed the flight of long-range Tu-22M3 strategic bombers over the Baltic Sea, which were closely monitored by fighter jets from foreign, presumably NATO, countries.
In response to escalating tensions, Sweden announced its intention to supply Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine to bolster its defenses, as the conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion over three years and eight months ago, shows no signs of resolution.
While Russia flexed its military might, uncertainty surrounded the Putin-Trump summit, with the White House indicating that Trump currently has no immediate plans to meet Putin. The delay in the summit came after Moscow reiterated its conditions for peace in Ukraine, emphasizing the relinquishment of control over the southeastern Donbas region.
Trump, in his second term for nine months, has advocated for conflict resolution but has refrained from imposing further sanctions despite criticizing both Putin and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy on different occasions. The White House clarified that the summit was not canceled but hinted at a shift in focus to Trump’s forthcoming visit to Asia.
Both sides are still discussing the summit dates, with detailed preparations expected to take time, as diplomatic discussions continue amid escalating military exercises and geopolitical tensions.
