Perplexity’s Comet AI browser has revolutionized the way people navigate the internet. This AI technology can handle tasks like booking flights and online shopping autonomously. Recently, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas announced that Comet’s arrival on the mobile platform could render Android obsolete.
During an event, Srinivas disclosed that early access links for Comet were being distributed for Android users. While Comet was initially accessible on desktop through invite links, it can now be freely downloaded without links.
Srinivas outlined the eligibility criteria for receiving an invite link for Comet on Android, emphasizing the importance of being a Perplexity Android user and having a Pro/Max user status. This suggests that Perplexity is targeting paid users and Android loyalists.
Comet, with its AI capabilities, has the potential to overshadow Android, the world’s largest mobile operating system. Srinivas expressed confidence in Comet’s ability to potentially replace Android, indicating a future where users may no longer be dependent on traditional operating systems and apps.
Furthermore, Srinivas mentioned that Comet will soon be introduced on iOS, expanding its reach to Apple users.
In a rapidly evolving tech landscape, Perplexity’s Comet faces competition from OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas and enhanced AI features in Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. Notably, earlier this year, Perplexity attempted to acquire Google Chrome for $34.5 billion.
It’s worth noting that modern browsers like Comet, Edge, and ChatGPT Atlas are built on Chromium, an open-source web browser project by Google that also powers Chrome. This common foundation underscores the interconnectedness of these AI-driven browsers.
