“Nirav Modi Teases ‘Dramatic Developments’ in Extradition Battle”

Fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, currently imprisoned in the UK for over six years, has alluded to upcoming “dramatic developments” in his prolonged extradition battle back to India. The 54-year-old, sought by Indian authorities in connection with the $2 billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud and money laundering scandal, made these comments during a civil hearing in London’s Royal Courts of Justice related to an outstanding Bank of India debt exceeding $8 million.

During the court session, representing himself as a Litigant in Person, Nirav expressed concerns about restricted computer access and vision issues, claiming an unfair trial process. In a moment of frustration, he emphasized the need for common sense, citing his experiences in prison. The Bank of India, represented by lawyers Tom Beasley and Milan Kapadia, opposed Nirav’s request to halt the proceedings, arguing that it would unjustly prolong the unresolved claim.

Despite Nirav’s plea for a stay, Justice Tinkler denied the request, confirming that the trial, scheduled for January 2026, will proceed as planned. The judge assured accommodations for Nirav’s medical requirements, including computer accessibility. Nirav Modi remains optimistic about his legal prospects, hoping for discharge or bail, especially after UK judges agreed to review new evidence in his extradition case, a rare occurrence given the stringent criteria in such matters.

The UK Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) verified Nirav’s application to reopen his extradition appeal, with India already submitting its counterarguments. The upcoming hearing, anticipated in late November, could be a pivotal moment for the high-profile financial scandal involving Nirav Modi, who has been incarcerated since his arrest in March 2019. Despite repeated bail denials due to flight risk concerns, Nirav faces multiple criminal charges in India, including the PNB fraud, money laundering allegations, and witness tampering.

In 2021, the UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel, approved Nirav’s extradition following the establishment of a prima facie case against him by the courts. The impending hearing holds the potential to significantly impact one of India’s most prominent financial scandals, signaling potential progress in the long-standing legal saga surrounding Nirav Modi.
