Domestic stock markets took a breather on Friday following a recent surge to record highs. The S&P BSE Sensex edged up 65.92 points to 85,786.30 around 9:22 am, while the NSE Nifty50 saw a slight decline of 16.65 points to 26,232.20.
Early trading witnessed most broader market indices in negative territory. Despite this, investors found solace in reduced volatility levels, indicating overall market stability amidst the minor pullback.
Experts interviewed by IndiaToday.in highlighted that the broader market trend continues to show strength for the year 2026, despite the need for caution regarding current valuations.
Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, noted that the recent highs reached by the Sensex and Nifty were primarily driven by a select group of large-cap stocks, creating a market paradox where retail investors, especially newcomers who entered after the Covid crash in March 2020, are facing portfolio losses despite the market’s peak performance.
Vijayakumar pointed out that the retail investor dilemma stems from an excessive focus on small-cap stocks, leading to unrealistic expectations of outperformance regardless of valuations. To capitalize on the anticipated 2026 market rally driven by robust earnings growth, Vijayakumar recommended a shift towards investing in quality large-caps and mid-caps with growth potential.
While headline indices soared, the Nifty Smallcap Index lags nearly 9% below its peak due to weak earnings growth and elevated valuations within the segment. Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit, highlighted the potential for further upside movement in the index but noted the current lack of momentum.
James anticipated the index to trade within a narrow range, with potential dips creating buying opportunities, while a breach of key support levels could expose the Nifty to further downside risks.
In conclusion, market analysts foresee a mixed outlook with potential upsides and downsides, urging investors to remain cautious and strategic in their investment decisions to navigate the evolving market landscape effectively.
