Britain’s King Charles has taken a significant step by removing all titles and honors from his brother Andrew and evicting him from his residence at Windsor, Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday.
The palace stated that the King had initiated formal proceedings to strip Prince Andrew of his Style, Titles, and Honors, decreeing that he will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
The official royal statement from the palace mentioned, “These measures are deemed necessary, despite his continued denial of the allegations against him.”
The directive also terminates Andrew’s lease on Royal Lodge, a grand 30-room estate near Windsor Castle where he has resided for an extended period, compelling him to find alternative private housing.
The statement further emphasized, “Their Majesties want to express that their thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victims and survivors of all forms of abuse.”
PUBLIC PRESSURE AND PROTEST
This royal action comes in response to growing public outrage and renewed scrutiny of Andrew’s connections to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Recently, at a public event at Lichfield Cathedral, King Charles faced heckling from a protester questioning his knowledge of Andrew and Epstein, and accusing him of potential police involvement in covering up for Andrew.
This incident highlighted the increasing discomfort over how the monarchy has dealt with the scandal.
A FALL FROM GRACE
Prince Andrew, aged 65, has been embroiled in controversy since his association with Epstein came to light years ago. Earlier, with his brother’s consent, he renounced all his royal titles, including the use of “Duke of York.”
Despite his persistent denials, Andrew’s reputation remains tarnished following the legal action taken by Virginia Giuffre, accusing him of sexual misconduct when she was 17. In 2022, Andrew settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed sum while maintaining his innocence, claiming a lack of memory of ever meeting Giuffre.
The publication of Giuffre’s posthumous memoir this year recounting her encounters with Andrew and Epstein has reignited public anger and calls for accountability.
