Instagram Reels can become quite captivating, leading us into the vortex of mindless content consumption that we often blame on the algorithm. However, Instagram has now introduced a feature that empowers users to curate their Reels feed with the help of AI. In a recent blog post, Instagram revealed that users will have direct control over the content displayed in the Reels section through AI technology.
This new functionality allows users to actively shape their Reels feed, moving away from being passive recipients of algorithm-driven content. By tapping on a new icon resembling two lines with hearts in the top right corner while browsing through Reels, users can access a summary of topics tailored to their interests by Instagram.
The summary page presents a compilation of topics based on recent user activity, including watched, liked, shared, or skipped content. Users can input specific topics they wish to see more or less of, prompting the platform to adjust recommendations accordingly. This feature signifies a departure from the previously opaque nature of content algorithms on social media platforms, where users often had little insight into why certain content appeared on their feeds.
Once users select their preferred topics for Reels, they can showcase them on their Instagram Story, offering followers a glimpse into the type of Reels content they enjoy. Instagram has emphasized that this change is just the initial step, with plans to extend similar controls to the Explore tab and other areas of the app.
At present, the AI-driven customization feature is exclusively available to users in the United States, but Instagram has assured a forthcoming global rollout for English-speaking audiences.
