Team India’s vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from the intensive care unit and is making a rapid recovery following a rib injury sustained in the Sydney ODI. According to sources familiar with the situation, Shreyas underwent a minor surgical procedure and is progressing well.
Having communicated with several teammates via phone and transitioning to solid foods, Shreyas is reportedly in good spirits. It is anticipated that his recuperation will accelerate upon the arrival of his family. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) team doctor is supervising Shreyas’ care.
The injury occurred during the 3rd ODI while Shreyas attempted a remarkable catch to dismiss Alex Carey. Unfortunately, he fell awkwardly, resulting in a significant injury that required immediate medical attention. Subsequent examinations revealed a laceration in his spleen and internal bleeding, which can pose serious risks depending on the extent of the bleeding.
The BCCI provided an update on Shreyas’ condition, confirming that he is stable, under close observation, and making notable progress in his recovery. The statement from BCCI detailed the nature of Shreyas’ injury and the medical interventions taken to address it.
Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20I captain and Shreyas’ teammate from Mumbai, expressed optimism after speaking with Shreyas, who is responding well.
The recovery period for a spleen injury typically ranges from six to twelve weeks, indicating that Shreyas is likely to miss the upcoming South Africa ODI series.
