India has introduced a significant advancement in indigenous semiconductor technology by unveiling Dhruv64, the country’s first native 1.0 GHz, 64-bit dual-core microprocessor. This milestone underscores India’s push towards self-sufficiency in crucial industries and defense technology. Dhruv64, a groundbreaking creation within the nation, is poised to enhance India’s domestic semiconductor and processor capabilities, reducing reliance on foreign innovations.
Developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) under the Microprocessor Development Programme (MDP), Dhruv64 emerges amidst government initiatives like the Digital India RISC-V program. This initiative aims to boost the design, testing, and prototyping of homegrown chips. According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, Dhruv64 is a direct outcome of these supportive measures, emphasizing the development of indigenous technology to meet national requirements.
The versatile nature of Dhruv64 makes it valuable for both commercial and strategic purposes. It is expected to cut down on imported processors, especially in critical sectors like defense and high-performance computing. India currently consumes 20% of all global microprocessors, making this new processor a viable alternative for startups, academia, and industry players.
The 64-bit architecture and 1.0 GHz dual-core design of Dhruv64 represent a significant advancement in chip technology for India. This leap in power and versatility opens doors to more sophisticated, secure, and efficient hardware tailored to India’s specific needs. With enhanced performance and modern architecture, Dhruv64 can support a wide array of applications, ranging from embedded systems to high-performance computing tasks, thereby broadening India’s technological landscape.
Following the successful launch of Dhruv64, the next generation of indigenous processors, including the Dhanush and Dhanush+ chips, are already in the pipeline. These upcoming chips are anticipated to further strengthen India’s self-reliance in critical technology sectors. The success of Dhruv64 is expected to catalyze additional projects and investments in local chip design, reinforcing India’s ambitions in this field.
Dhruv64’s debut comes shortly after ISRO unveiled the Vikram 32-bit chip, showcasing India’s continuous strides in technological innovation.
