IAS officer Talo Potom, who turned himself in to the Arunachal Pradesh Police, was mentioned in an FIR related to the alleged sexual abuse and suicide of a 19-year-old individual. Potom released a video statement refuting all accusations, labeling them as groundless. The deceased, Gomchu Yekar, in his suicide note accused Potom and senior Rural Works Department engineer Likwang Lowang of sexual abuse, intimidation, and mental harassment. Yekar also alleged contracting HIV and accused an official of deserting and extorting him afterward.
Following the emergence of the note, Lowang took his own life, while Potom, serving as Secretary in the Public Works Department of the Delhi Government, was evading authorities. Prior to surrendering, Potom issued a detailed video denying the charges as entirely false and baseless, asserting no involvement in the incident.
Potom clarified that his interactions with Yekar were strictly professional and focused on administrative duties during his tenure as Deputy Commissioner in Itanagar. He denied any coercion or personal relationship, stating that Yekar volunteered for anti-drug campaigns and social initiatives, leading to his employment as a Multi Tasking Staff member.
Additionally, Potom revealed that Yekar faced extortion charges after being relocated from Itanagar and had blocked his number due to persistent requests for assistance with those cases. Dismissing claims linking him to Yekar’s health or personal matters, Potom clarified that Yekar had tested negative for HIV.
Emphasizing his lack of personal connections with the deceased beyond official duties, Potom rejected all allegations. He concluded by urging compliance with the law and surrendered to facilitate an impartial investigation. Special Superintendent of Police Nyelam Nega confirmed Potom’s custody while investigations continue.
